THE METAPHOR IN THE ORGANIZATION OF MUSIC KNOWLEDGE

Synopsis

In the present text, we resume the relevance of metaphors for knowledge
representation, specifically with regard to music and its meanings. A verbal expression
of the listener’s experience with the music escape from the use of referential concepts
(referentiality) and appears represented by probabilistic conjunctures, often related to the
appraisal and emotions achieved in music listening. The metaphor is discussed from the
perspective of Peirce’s semiotics, in which it is a type of sign. Complementarily, metaphor
also finds support in cognitive linguistics, which discusses its function and functioning in
discourse and cognition. We give special attention to its use in the field of music and try
to demonstrate the possibilities of understanding the metaphor in the KO as a resource
for plural cultural representation, inspired by the writings of García Gutiérrez.
