SEMIOTIC-CULTURAL FOUNDATIONS FOR KNOWLEDGE ORGANIZATION
Synopsis
Knowledge organization has dedicated to suggesting solutions to pragmatically
solve problems of knowledge representation and retrieval. Thus, it uses concepts or
appropriates concept definitions to validate knowledge representation and retrieval
processes. The interpretive line that supports the present discussion is the Semiotics of
Culture. The aim is to present the semiotinowledge organization can benefit from the
argumentative approach and the concepts proposed by the Semiotics of Culture. To
underpin the foundations that would permeate a semiotics appropriate for the studies of
knowledge organization, and specifically the themes related to sociocultural approaches,
we highlight the semiotic bases and the socio-anthropological bases. The intention is to
highlight some concepts that are not always underlined in the literature to resolve the
semio-cultural problem that is examined by Knowledge Organization.
