Synopsis

This book, from a decidedly interdisciplinary perspective, addresses the issue of the digitalization of the world of work as a fundamental fact of our time. Composed of twenty-six articles classified into four thematic axes, namely: (I) Technology, Work and Society in the 21st Century; (II) Technology, Law, Health and Safety; (III) Technology and Society and (IV) Technology, Culture and Environment, they constitute a working tool at the service of contemporary scholars and, on the other hand, are a sample of the scientific work and texts produced within the scope of the Postgraduate Program in Law and the Postgraduate Program in Planning and Analysis of Public Policies, both from the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences of UNESP, Campus Franca, which are shared with society in general as part of their institutional mission.
Using various theoretical instruments, this collection describes, analyzes and criticizes the determining role of technology in our time, especially in the world of work. In fact, the impacts and challenges brought about by technology are strongly felt in the productive sectors of communications, sports, tourism, medicine, law and the arts in general.
The Promethean vision of technology and any technological object contributes to its identification in our society as synonymous with good and truth, which, added to its intended neutrality and proven effectiveness, means that any technological innovation is accepted and adopted quickly, without any questioning, without any awareness of its limits, its ambivalence, its prejudices, its externalities, its costs and its negative consequences for the individual, for society and for the biosphere; such as, for example, the intensification of the exploitation and marginalization of labor in the face of capital, the discrediting and lack of meaning of human work, pressures of all kinds, the replacement of workers by robots, permanent control and surveillance, the intensification of teleworking and home office, the imposition of unattainable goals, excessive working hours, mental health problems among workers, burnout, depression, stress and karoshi. This collection sheds light on this little-known reality, especially because the right to protection against automation, established in the Brazilian Federal Constitution (art. 7, XXVII), remains a dead letter and many labor rights and guarantees already established are reduced and eliminated, and others, such as the right to disconnect, are unknown and disrespected.
